How often have you had aching muscles after a tough workout or may be a nagging discomfort in your lower back?
Musculoskeletal pain is one of the most common types of pain, and is a typical reason for doctor visits.
Pain that affects the bones, muscles, ligaments, tendons and nerves are all considered as musculoskeletal pain. It can be widespread (where your whole body aches) or localised in just one body part. Many people experience acute musculoskeletal pain after an injury, minor accidents, falls, sprains, dislocations and direct blows to the muscle.
Musculoskeletal pain can also be chronic or persistent. In fact, one of the most common types of musculoskeletal pain is low back pain. Overuse (for instance, in work-related injuries or repetitive stress), poor posture or prolonged immobilisation can also lead to chronic musculoskeletal pain.
Symptoms of musculoskeletal pain depend on whether the pain is caused by an injury or overwork and whether it is chronic or acute. The symptoms can also differ from person to person. Common symptoms include:
- Localised or widespread pain that can worsen with movement
- Aching or stiffness of the entire body
- The feeling that your muscles have been pulled or are overworked
- Sleep disturbances
- Twitching muscles
- The sensation of "burning" in your muscles
